Completed in April 2008, this scheme was one of three major infrastructure contracts
that provided a strategic link between Sharjah and the Northern Emirates to the
new International Airport at Jebel Ali and thereafter to Abu Dhabi. This vital
route was a key part of the Government’s strategy to remove HGV traffic from
the heavily congested Dubai Ring Road in addition to accommodating future development
growth.
The works consisted of initially four lanes of dual carriageway construction, later
upgraded to six lanes, with inner and outer shoulders separated with a guard rail
over an approximate length of 24 km.
In addition to the major earthworks, a comprehensive network of primary utilities
was installed in each of the adjacent carriageways. The contract terminated at the
crossing of the Dubai – Al Ain highway and at this location a full cloverleaf
grade separated interchange was constructed of post –tensioned box girder
bridges and soil wall abutments. A comprehensive lighting network of high mast columns
provided illumination over the full 24km.
